Group Classes

Weekly group classes in tango

In M2tango’s group lessons, we emphasize a clear connection between the overall course and the goal of the individual lesson.

We select exercises, steps and music that make it easy to work with the different aspects of tango – and everyone receives personal feedback, regardless of level.

We attach great importance to both the leader and the follower feeling seen and cared for in the lesson. That is why we generally have two teachers in the groups: one leader and one follower.

We use partner swapping in each lesson – both to strengthen the social aspect of tango and because it sharpens senses, technique and learning.

The level of the class

Sometimes it can be difficult to know which class is right for you – and this can happen even if you have been dancing for a while. The artistic nature of tango makes it difficult to put levels into fixed frames and the right level for you depends on many factors, such as your experience, who you dance with and how much you practice outside of the lessons.

Our level system is therefore a guideline that can help you choose the right class, and if you are in doubt, ask your teachers. If you switch to a new teacher, it can also take some time before you feel comfortable – teachers may use different terms and variations, and it takes time to get used to it.

If you are completely new to tango, regardless of background, we would advise you to start in a Beginner class. Then you can always progress faster if you feel the need.

You can read the general description of the levels below.

beginner

We want you to be able to dance from day one.

Our beginner lessons give you a simple and thorough introduction to the basic elements of tango – with a focus on movement, posture, balance and the music. You also learn how the leader and follower communicate in the improvised couple dance.

The lessons emphasize a safe and cozy learning space, where you have plenty of time to learn.

We create a motivating environment where it should be fun to take the first steps into the universe of tango.

You dance with different partners and are guided by teachers who are passionate about giving you a good start.

Your level:
• Beginner 1: For those who have never danced tango before, or who have had a few introductory lessons.
• Beginner 2: For those who have completed Beginner 1, a summer course or a beginner's college.
• Beginner 3: For those who have completed Beginner 2 or have approximately 14–16 lessons of tango experience.

intermediate

At the intermediate level, we strive to expand your joy of dancing and make you want to explore the space of tango even more.

The lessons focus on strengthening your confidence in the basic elements of technique, musicality and communication, so that you begin to experience more flow in your dance.

We expand your repertoire so that you can dance more freely and variedly on the social dance floor. You work with mille/giro, sweep, variations in single and double tempo as well as an introduction to milonga and waltz. Later in the course, you are also introduced to boleo, sacada, gancho and more complex giro.

Your level: You move confidently in and out of forward and backward ocho and the cross. You have good basic navigation on the milonga floor, and your musicality includes both single and a little double tempo. You have started to improvise with the steps.

experienced

At the experienced level, we work to strengthen your security and self-confidence as a social dancer, so that no milonga floor feels unmanageable.

The instruction focuses on musicality, variation and quality of movement, so that you experience greater freedom in the dance.

We refine contact and communication – both in open and close embraces – and work with nuances in the lead/follow principles, precision and body awareness. We delve deeper into the technique and feel of the steps.

Your level: You have been introduced to boleo, sacada, gancho and giro. You understand the difference between parallel and crossed systems, and you feel at home in both open and close embrace. Your musicality is varied, and you improvise with greater confidence.

advanced

At this level, our goal is that you get the most out of your talent, motivation and personal expression. Here you will be truly challenged in terms of dance.

The lessons focus on precision, in-depth technique and refined musicality.

We work with complex improvisation, dynamic shifts and refining your ability to create a creative and nuanced interaction with your partner - both in a close and open embrace.

Your level: You know most of the advanced elements of tango such as colgada, volcada, enrosques, planeos as well as both circular and linear boleos.

As a leader: Your leading is precise, dynamic, musical and comfortable.

As a follower: You follow and express yourself actively with your movements, and your embrace is present and dynamic.
